The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has directed all tax offices across Nigeria to open for weekend operations throughout June to help companies meet the deadline for filing their Companies Income Tax (CIT) returns.

The Chairman of FIRS, Zacch Adedeji, gave the directive as part of his administration’s efforts to provide better service delivery and ensure ease of compliance during the peak filing period. The measure took effect from Saturday, June 14, and will run until Sunday, June 29

According to the schedule, tax offices will now open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturdays and from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sundays during this period.

A statement signed by Adedeji’s Special Adviser on Media, Dare Adekanmbi, explained that the move aligns with the chairman’s customer-focused reforms at the FIRS. The initiative is expected to ease pressure on businesses and improve voluntary compliance.

“June marks the peak of the annual Companies Income Tax filing season, especially for companies whose financial year ended on December 31,” the statement read. “This decision ensures that taxpayers have extended hours to meet their legal obligations without facing unnecessary stress.”

The Coordinating Directors of Large Taxpayers Group (LTG), Government and Medium Taxpayers Group (GMTG), and Emerging Taxpayers Group (ETG)—Ms Amina Ado, Dr Dick Irri, and Mr Kabir Abba—have also instructed all staff under their jurisdictions to comply fully with the weekend schedule.

Since assuming office, Adedeji has made significant changes to reposition the FIRS as a service-driven institution rather than merely a tax collection agency. The extension of working days is one of several reforms designed to simplify tax processes, increase revenue generation, and support businesses.

Taxpayers are encouraged to take advantage of the extended hours to avoid last-minute rushes and penalties.
