Commander of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) as well as 3 Armoured Division, Jos, Maj-Gen. Ibrahim Ali, has confirmed that four more persons died on Tuesday, February 15, 2022 in two separate incidents in Jos North local Council of Plateau State.

This takes the death toll in the attack on Jos miners and commuters to five. Military Information Officer of OPSH, Maj. Ishaku Takwa, stated yesterday in Jos: “Operation Safe Haven received a distress call on civil unrest that ensued between Fulani herders and miners at Yelwa Zangam general area of Jos North in the early hours of same day. A vehicle conveying passengers was also attacked along Jos–Jingir road. On Tuesday morning, two people were killed, while in the night of the same day, a reprisal attack claimed three lives bringing the total to five.”

According to him, troops of OPSH swiftly responded to both incidents and brought the situation under control.

“Unfortunately, one person was killed and another injured at the mining site. In the unfortunate attack on commuters, three persons lost their lives, two others sustained injuries and six were rescued,” he said.

While condemning the violence, Ali commiserated with the families of the victims of the unfortunate incidents.

Assuring that everything will be done to bring the perpetrators of the violence to book, the Commander urged law-abiding citizens to remain calm, as troops are already on the trail of the perpetrators.

Also, Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong, has condemned the attacks on innocent miners and commuters. The Governor’s Director of Press and Public Affairs, Dr. Makut Macham, said Lalong also commended the security forces for swiftly responding to the situation and restoring normalcy.

He commiserated with the families of the victims, including survivors, assuring them that government will stop at nothing to ensure that the attackers are fished out and made to pay for their actions.

Lalong reiterated his call to citizens to report any suspicious activity within their environment to security operatives, traditional rulers or other community intelligence channels.

Meanwhile, he has directed the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) to coordinate the response and visit those receiving treatment in the hospital to ensure they are receiving good care.
