The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has activated rescue operations following floods caused by heavy rainfall at the Kpege neighborhood of Mokwa Local Government Area, (LGA), Niger State.
Director General of the agency, Zubaida Umar, made this known in Abuja.
She said that search and rescue operations are currently underway, involving emergency volunteers from Mokwa Local Government Area, the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), and the Nigeria Red Cross, alongside local volunteers.
Umar revealed that the rescued individuals are being evacuated to the hospital, with first aid being administered to them.
The agency also said security agencies, including military disaster response units from the nearby Kainji Military formation, have been contacted to assist with ongoing operations.
According to the DG, “The main objectives of the operation are to rescue survivors and evacuate the injured and deceased, while ensuring safety, providing life-saving food, water, sanitation, temporary shelter, and security, and restoring normalcy to the affected area.”
Residents near the incident site have also been advised to remain vigilant and report incidents to security operatives and emergency responders.
NEMA said a comprehensive assessment of the situation will be conducted to guide recovery planning.
