Flood sacks communities, destroys farmlands in Abia, Kebbi

No fewer than 200 communities in Kebbi State have been submerged, while thousands of farmlands have been destroyed by flood across the state. Briefing journalists yesterday at his office, Executive Director of the Kebbi State Emergency Management Agency (KSEMA), Abbas Kamba said the flood, which occurred through the River Niger, destroyed many houses and farmlands.

He explained further that with the recent visit by the National agency, the assessment records have done and submitted to the Federal and State governments for their support.

Abbas disclosed that Suru, Bagudo, Yauri, Shanga, Ngasky, Dandi and Arugungu local councils were mostly affected, saying the Kebbi State government has already provided the councils with new lands for resettlement and also ensured their safety by providing healthcare.He, however, urged the people to remain calm, as the state and Federal Government are working to provide the needed assistance to the affected areas.

Meanwhile, the Abia State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has reported that flood has sacked over 40 communities in 14 local councils of the state.Acting SEMA Executive Secretary, Sonny Jackson confirmed this in Umuahia yesterday after he and the Head of Owerri Zone Office of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Evans Ugoji inspected of some of the affected areas.

He listed the affected local councils as Aba North and South, Osisioma Ngwa, Ugwunagbo, Obingwa, Arochukwu, Isiala Ngwa North and South, Ikwuano, Ohafia, Bende, Ukwa East, Umuahia North and South, but described Aba South as the worst affected.Jackson disclosed that two persons died in Umunwarie Community in Osisioma Ngwa Council, while many residents in some affected local councils are taking refuge in public buildings and people’s homes in nearby communities.
