For a peaceful festive season, the Plateau Police Command has restricted movement in five Local Councils of the state. The Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Adesina, made the confirmation yesterday in Jos.
He explained that the restriction would run between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m., adding that it would also subsist from December 23 to January 3, 2025. Adesina listed the affected council areas to include Barkin Ladi; Bassa; Mangu; Riyom, and Bokkos.
His words: “After due consultation with critical stakeholders, the command has put a restriction on night grazing by herders, night farming, night operation of drinking joints, mining activities at night and operation of commercial motorcycles.
“This will run between December 23 and January 3, 2025.
“We have also banned the operation of commercial tricycles, also known as Keke Napep, within the Jos-Bukuru metropolis on December 25, December 26 and January 1.”
The CP said the command had also deployed its personnel to the 17 local councils of the state to ensure hitch-free festivities. He advised residents to be security-conscious and to report any suspicious movement to security agencies.
SIMILARLY, the Commissioner of Police in Kogi, Bethrand Onuoha, has ordered watertight security across the state during the Yuletide and beyond. He gave the directive yesterday while briefing members of the Command Management Team and Tactical Commanders in Lokoja.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP William Ovye Aya, the CP further disclosed that the command had adopted comprehensive crime prevention and control strategies to ensure adequate security of life and property throughout the festive period.
He assured the people of the state of sustained efforts by the command in synergy with other security agencies in fighting crimes and criminality, as well as improving public safety across Kogi.
Onuoha charged the Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) and their supervisory Area Commanders to deploy human and other operational assets for confidence-building and crime-prevention patrols on major highways, residential and, vulnerable points, places of worship and other locations of interest. He also ordered them to carry out undercover operations in black spots, flash points and other vulnerable criminal spots.
The CP, while assuring the people of Kogi of adequate security measures in place, urged them to remain security-conscious throughout the period, and report any suspicious movement or activity within their communities.
MEANWHILE, Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has flagged off a free bus ride to enable non-indigenes to travel home to celebrate Christmas and New Year in various parts of the country.
According to him, the 710 travellers’ free ride would cushion the economic hardships promoted by the fuel subsidy removal policy of the Federal Government.
Represented by the General Manager, Borno Express Transport Corporation, Grema Zanna, yesterday, in Maiduguri, the governor disclosed: “Our free transportation initiative will facilitate the travelling of the non-indigenes to their respective destinations in the Northcentral, Southeast, Southwest and South-South regions.”
He stated that the end-of-year free bus ride was part of his programme to alleviate the high costs of transportation in the country. The transportation initiative, which was introduced in 2020 by the Zulum administration, was to overcome the high costs of living among the less privileged, particularly the vulnerable groups, including widows.
Chairman of the Ohanaeze All Progressives Congress (APC) support group, Chief Ugochukwu Egwidike, said each of the travellers received N50,000, before departing to their destinations.
He added that the 250 widows, who did not travel, would get N50,000 each to celebrate Christmas in the state. A trustee of the Igbo Welfare Association/Ohanaeze Ndigbo in the state, Napoleon Egbonu, observed that the free bus ride was a unifying factor that should be emulated by other governors.
