Forensic expert urges stronger private sector role in fraud prevention

Forensic expert and author, Her Royal Highness, Erelu Dr. Pearl Ogbulu, has called for increased private sector investment in fraud prevention to make Nigeria a safer destination for investors.

Ogbulu made the appeal on Wednesday in Abuja during a briefing ahead of her forthcoming book launch, *Fraud Unmasked: Forensic Fraud Solutions*, and the maiden Joint Security Forensic Conference.

She stressed that stronger laws to promote inter-agency collaboration and heightened citizens’ vigilance were crucial to curbing the activities of fraudsters.

Describing the book launch as “a defining moment for professionals, leaders, and citizens who believe in the power of knowledge, collaboration, and shared responsibility,” Ogbulu warned that fraud was “a silent predator that infiltrates systems, drains resources, and corrodes public trust.”

“Fraud does not just steal money; it steals opportunities, livelihoods, and futures,” she said.

According to her, addressing fraud requires more than reactive enforcement.

“It demands a proactive, strategic, and multidisciplinary approach, and that is why I wrote the book ‘Fraud Unmasked. It is not just a book; it is a toolkit, a collection of tested forensic methods, investigative insights, and policy recommendations.

It is designed to help institutions detect fraud early, prevent its occurrence, and respond with precision when it is discovered,” she explained.

The book, she noted, was written to guide bankers, auditors, policymakers, entrepreneurs, investigators, and citizens seeking to understand fraud and ways to stop it.

Ogbulu said the conference’s theme, *One Nation, One Network*, was chosen to address fragmentation in Nigeria’s anti-fraud and security efforts.

“Agencies work in silos, data is not shared in real time, and valuable intelligence is lost in bureaucratic bottlenecks. Imagine what could happen if our law enforcement bodies, financial regulators, security services, tech experts, academic institutions, and civic organisations worked together as one network,” she said.

She added that the conference would bring together experts in forensic science, cyber security, risk management, and governance to explore practical tools, technologies, and coordinated strategies to build a “unified, intelligent, and resilient network” for the nation.
