The rich culture of the Abam Onyerubi Clan from Bende Local Government Area, Abia State, was proudly showcased last weekend in Benin City, the capital of Edo State, as family, friends, and dignitaries gathered to celebrate the life of Chief Gabriel Oziegbe Ekhator Akpata.
The centenary celebration and funeral rites were organised by his son-in-law, Rt. Hon. Dr. Agwu U. Agwu, former Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly and current Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Abia State University, Uturu (ABSU).
Pa Akpata, a retired Permanent Secretary in the Edo State civil service, passed away on 30th December 2025 at the age of over 100. His burial rites, held in Benin City, blended tradition, culture, and ceremony in a vibrant display of heritage and respect.
During the event, Hon. Agwu presented the legendary Abam War Dance and the Ogene Cultural Troupe, accompanied by traditional and community leaders adorned in colourful attire and regalia, honouring the life of the centenarian patriarch.
“My father-in-law was an extraordinary, caring, and loving man whose memory will remain evergreen. I am grateful to ABSU Management, members of Council, staff, and friends who joined our family in solidarity,” Hon. Agwu said. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ndukwe Okeudo, was represented by the Registrar, Dr. Acho Elendu.
Chief Mrs. Eunice Osamede Agwu, daughter of the late Pa Akpata, noted that the lessons learned from her father shaped her into the strong woman of faith she is today, and positively influenced her husband and children through his wisdom and guidance.
Princess Victoria Eniye Akpata, wife of the late patriarch for six decades, described him as a devoted Catholic whose steadfast faith inspired the family.
“If I had the chance to live it all over again, I would choose you. Thank you for being an extraordinary husband and an amazing father to our children,” she said.
Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti eulogized Pa Akpata:
“Through decades of public service, he contributed meaningfully to governance and administration, leaving behind a record worthy of emulation.”
The presence of the Abia delegation highlighted the power of ethnic and interstate unity, celebrating in-law bonds and the Igbo spirit of respect for family and tradition.
According to ABSU Public Relations Officer, Comrade Chijioke Nwogu, various family groups of the late patriarch brought the celebration to life on the dance floor, amidst decorations, melodious music, and rich cultural entertainment.
“The event recaptured the words of William Shakespeare: ‘When beggars die, there are no comets seen; the heavens themselves blaze forth the death of princes,’” Nwogu said.
Members of the ABSU Governing Council present included Professor David Chikezie, Chief Elelenta Nwabisi Elele, Engineer Kalu Ntoo, Chief Agwu Kalu Igwe, University Bursar Mr. Mark Amaefula, and Dean of Student Affairs Professor Dick Uduma, among others.
