The conference of speakers of state legislatures of Nigeria has cautioned the executive arms of government to refrain from what they described as “interference” and engaging in other activities aimed at suppressing and stifling the smooth functions of government in the states.

The group said in a statement issued by the Administrative Secretary Busari Sarafadeen on behalf of the Chairman, and Speaker of Kebbi State House of Assembly, Abdulmumini Ismaila Kamba in connection to the recent arrest of the speaker and principal officers of the Zamfara State Assembly by the Department of the State Security Service (DSS).

According to him,”We like to point out that the system of government whose legislative arm is stifled, suppressed or at the mercy of the executive is to say the least undemocratic and despotic. In such an environment, the people do not have a say and their feelings, needs and aspiration would not be considered.”

The conference accused Zamfara State Governor Abdulaziz Yari of alleged undemocratic move by setting a bad precedent which, it said, is capable of throwing the state and the country into anarchy.
