Foundation calls for security in schools
Teacher Essien Ita Itam Educational Trust Fund Foundation has advocated stronger security presence in schools to enable pupils and students study under peaceful and secure atmosphere.
The Chairman, Chief Gershom Henshaw, made the call yesterday in Calabar during the presentation of cheques of N500,000 each to 50 pupils from 10 secondary schools in Cross River Southern Senatorial District.
He said: “It is more important that adequate security be deployed in schools, considering recent happenings in the country. Learning should not be a burden on pupils and students, but a worthwhile experience.”
The scholarship, according to him, is a yearly event targeted at enhancing quality education in the state.
He explained that a minimum of N8 million is spent yearly for 50 secondary schools students in the state, adding that the Foundation has sponsored over 400 students in the last eight years since it was established by the late wife of former director general of the State Security Service (SSS), Ekpenyong Ita, CFR, in memory of Ita’s late father, who was a foremost teacher in the state.
