Foundation provides shelter support for Akoka traders

Traders operating in open-air spaces in Akoka, Yaba, received a boost on Wednesday as the Funmilayo Charity Foundation distributed branded mobile business umbrellas to support their daily operations.

The donation, which took place on June 19, was part of the Foundation’s Small-Scale Business Support Programme, aimed at enhancing the working conditions of low-income entrepreneurs, especially those exposed to sun and rain without shelter.

Founder of the Foundation, Mr. Akeem Olanrewaju, said the initiative followed a quiet needs assessment that identified fruit sellers and roadside vendors working in difficult environments.

“Many of these traders work long hours under difficult conditions. The idea is to provide something as basic but impactful as shelter, not just for comfort, but as a step towards more secure and sustainable livelihoods,” he said.

The umbrellas, which are built for mobility and durability, are expected to help beneficiaries protect their goods, extend operating hours, and attract more customers.

Some of the traders who received the support expressed gratitude and described the gesture as timely.

“This small intervention can go a long way,” Mr. Olanrewaju added. “When people are given the tools to do business with a little more dignity and comfort, they are more likely to succeed.”

He also appealed for support from individuals, private sector players, and development partners to scale such targeted interventions, which he said can complement government efforts in addressing poverty.

The Foundation, named in honour of the late Mrs. Funmilayo, also runs projects focused on education, healthcare, vocational training, and humanitarian assistance across underserved communities in Nigeria.
