
LEAP Africa, in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, has reaffirmed its commitment to empowering young people across Africa with access to dignified and fulfilling employment.
This commitment was expressed at a networking event in Lagos aimed at advancing the impact of the Mastercard Foundation Associates Programme.
In one year, the programme has facilitated the placement of over 1,200 young professionals—known as Mastercard Foundation Associates—across 15 African countries, including South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, Kenya, Botswana, Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, and Zambia.
The Lagos event, organized alongside Jobberman and other implementing partners, brought together Mastercard Foundation Associates, employers, program implementers, and key stakeholders to assess progress, explore sustainability strategies, and discuss innovative approaches to workforce readiness.
During the opening remarks, Executive Director of LEAP Africa, Kehinde Ayeni, emphasized the long-term impact of the initiative, stating that Africa’s youth are the driving force behind economic transformation.
“The Mastercard Foundation Associates Program goes beyond job placements. It is about building sustainable career pathways that lead to long-term fulfillment. At LEAP Africa, we’ve witnessed the remarkable growth of Associates, who have gained essential skills, expanded their networks, and acquired invaluable workplace experience. Today’s discussions will further refine our strategies to create even greater opportunities for young professionals.”
Program Coordinator at Jobberman,Toluwani Aina praised the program’s effectiveness, sayig the talent emerging from the Mastercard Foundation Associates Program is exceptional.
“These young professionals have demonstrated remarkable skills, adaptability, and a strong work ethic, proving that with the right opportunities, they can excel in any industry. Selected associates shared testimonials about how the program had shaped their professional journeys. Elizabeth Ajiboye, one of the Mastercard Foundation Associates, reflected on her experience, saying that the Mastercard Foundation Associates Program has opened doors she never thought possible.
“The mentorship, exposure, and networking opportunities have positioned me for greater career prospects. I’m excited to take the next steps, knowing I have the right support system in place.”
Another Associate spoke about how the program provided the practical experience necessary to secure employment, stating, “When I joined the Mastercard Foundation Associates Program, I had the qualifications but lacked the practical experience needed to secure a job.
“This programme changed everything for me. I have gained critical soft and technical skills, and today, I feel confident about my career trajectory. I hope future cohorts continue to benefit from this life-changing initiative.”
