France urges Burundi to implement UN resolution

The French government has expressed its concerns over the ongoing crisis in Burundi.

The move follows Burundi’s rejection of a United Nations (UN) resolution that called for the deployment of 228 UN forces, in the country.

The deputy spokesperson of the French Foreign Affairs ministry, announced yesterday in Paris, that Burundian authorities should implement without delay the UN resolution adopted by the Security Council on July 29.

During his visit to Tanzania, the French Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jean-Marc Ayrault, met with Benjamin Mkapa, mediator and facilitator for the Burundi peace talks and reiterated the support of the French government, in finding a solution to the Burundi crisis.

According to Burundian authorities, accepting the resolution would be in violation of its sovereignty.

They also rejected the French-led UN resolution saying, authorising the force was made without its consent.

The UN Security Council agreed to deploy the force to try to end more than a year of violence.
