Crude oil lifting from ExxonMobil facility in Nigeria has been halted following a force majeure declared by the company.

Crude oil lifting from ExxonMobil facility in Nigeria has been halted following a force majeure declared by the company.

Nigeria has struggled to pump enough oil to meet quota by the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) due to theft and vandalism. Output stood at about 1.2 million barrels last month against the 1.8 million barrels projected in the 2023 budget.

ExxonMobil, in a statement, yesterday, blamed the force majeure on industrial action by the company’s in-house workers’ union.

The strike action is coming amid existing push by the company to sell its shallow water assets in Nigeria.

Exxon spokesperson, Michelle Gray, said in the statement that the company would continue to take all reasonable actions to resolve the impasse in good time.

Three subsidiaries, Mobil Producing Nigeria, Esso Exploration & Production Nigeria and Esso Exploration & Production (Offshore East) are affected by the situation.

Mobil Producing Nigeria operates a joint venture with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation with over 90 offshore platforms at a capacity of over 550,000 barrels per day of crude, condensate and natural gas liquids.
