The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has unveiled an initiative aimed at standardising driver and rider training across Nigeria.
This was disclosed during the 2025 National Workshop for Driving School Proprietors and Instructors, held at the Federal Secretariat complex in Port Harcourt, Rivers State .
The two-day event, themed “Entrenching Highway Safety in Nigeria Through Standardised Driver and Riders Training,” brought together stakeholders to discuss the importance of maintaining safety standards in driving schools .
In his opening remarks, the Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, represented by the Zonal Commanding Officer, Assistant Corps Marshal Henry Benamaisia, highlighted the critical role of driving schools in fostering a culture of road safety.
“Driving schools are the first point of contact between would-be drivers and the culture of road safety,” he said, stressing their role in shaping the attitudes and behaviours of future road users.
He further noted that road safety is a shared responsibility among all road users and a vital aspect of national economic development. “Keen attention must be given to ensuring that safety standards are not compromised, as this can have far-reaching consequences for the economy and the well-being of citizens,” he added.
The Deputy Corps Marshal in charge of Training, Chidiebere Nkwonta, represented by the Head of Driving School Standardisation, Sunday Attah, revealed that the workshop would be held in eight centres nationwide between May and June 2025 .
According to him, the theme of this year’s workshop underscores the Agency’s commitment to reducing road traffic crashes and fatalities. “This theme also reinforces the pivotal role of certified driving schools in shaping competent and safety-conscious road users,” he said.
Attah urged participants to use the workshop as an opportunity to learn and collaborate with other stakeholders, noting that it was designed to be engaging and impactful.
The Rivers State Sector Commander, Inyang Umoh, described the workshop as part of the FRSC’s intervention programmes aimed at providing drivers and road users with a solid foundation in road safety. “The FRSC is always at the forefront when it comes to safe driving in Nigeria. As of today, there is no driver that will obtain a driving licence without going through what we have here,” he stated.
