Today, we’re excited to introduce an up-and-coming talent who’s at the forefront of data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence, all in the pursuit of a brighter future for businesses in Nigeria. In this exclusive interview, we’ll explore how this visionary is reshaping the marketing landscape and uncover the strategies behind leveraging AI for explosive business growth.
With a keen eye for uncovering valuable insights in data and a deep passion for utilising advanced technologies, this forward-thinking leader is redefining how we approach business success as well as helping Nigerian businesses unlock the vast potential of AI.
Olawale Babadina in a statement said: “AI in web analytics involves using artificial intelligence to analyse data collected from websites or mobile applications of any kind. This includes user behaviour, interactions and many more. By doing so, businesses can gain actionable insights that can help them optimise their websites, improve user experience and journey, and ultimately drive sales or leads as the case may be. In the Nigerian context, leveraging AI for web analytics can give businesses a competitive edge in understanding their customers and tailoring their contents accordingly.”
“It’s important to also note that traditional web analytics tools often provide basic metrics like page views, sessions, engagement rate and the likes. While these metrics are useful, don’t get me wrong, they don’t give the full picture of user behavior and that’s where artificial intelligence comes in. AI, on the other hand, can analyse huge amounts of data at incredible speeds, it can uncover patterns and trends that might not be immediately apparent. For instance, AI can segment users based on their behaviour and preferences, predict future trends, and even personalise content in real time to match individual user needs. This leads to a more personalised user experience, which can significantly increase engagement and conversion rates. Imagine visiting an ecommerce store and the experience is so personalised for you based on your shopping habits, the likelihood of you buying an item off the store is high.
So, it’s like moving from just counting numbers to understanding the story behind them.”
He further gave explanations on how Nigerian businesses can, especially SMEs, start implementing AI in their web analytics strategies, where he said, “It’s all about understanding the narrative behind the data. For Nigerian businesses, especially SMEs, the first step is to define clear objectives, Once they have their goals set, they can explore various AI tools and platforms available. Many cloud-based solutions offer affordable AI-driven analytics tools that don’t necessarily require in-depth technical knowledge.”
Integration can often be as simple as embedding a piece of code on their website. That sounds doable. Giving some practical examples of how AI has helped businesses in Nigeria improve their sales through web analytics. “Let’s take a look at Jumia, one of the largest e-commerce platforms in Nigeria, undoubtedly the largest in Africa as a whole. By leveraging AI in web analytics, Jumia was able to analyse shopping patterns and predict which products would be in demand, giving them the opportunity to optimise their inventory and marketing strategies. This not only increased their sales but also improved customer satisfaction by ensuring that popular items were always in stock. Its benefits are not just limited to e-commerce websites or businesses only, media companies like Pulse Nigeria are using AI-driven web analytics to optimise their content marketing strategies. AI tools help them to identify trending topics and popular content formats that attract more visitors resulting in higher retention rates and longer session durations. What does this translate into if you ask me, it translates to increased advertising revenue and sales for them. Those examples really bring the concept to life. It seems like AI is a game-changer for many businesses.
“There are challenges or limitations Nigerian businesses should be aware of when implementing AI in web analytics One of the biggest hurdles is data quality. AI relies on accurate and comprehensive data to function effectively. Many Nigerian businesses might struggle with fragmented or incomplete data, which can lead to inaccurate insights. Mind you, this challenge is not peculiar to only Nigerian businesses, I have seen this happen even in developed countries. Another challenge is the need for skilled personnel who can interpret AI-generated insights and translate them into actionable business strategies. Although AI can provide recommendations, human oversight is crucial to ensure those insights align with the business’s overall strategy.
“Also, there’s the issue of cost. While AI tools are becoming more affordable, implementing them can still be a financial burden for smaller businesses. However, with strategic planning and prioritisation, even SMEs can start small and scale up as they begin to see results.
“Speaking of challenges, there are data privacy concerns. With AI analysing user data, businesses can ensure they comply with regulations and protect customer information as privacy is indeed a significant concern. Businesses must be aware of the fact that they need to adhere to data protection regulations both in Nigeria and across the globe. To ensure compliance, businesses would need to implement robust security measures and be transparent about their data collection practices. This is crucial. Businesses must also provide users with the option to opt-out of data tracking if they wish. Regular audits and privacy assessments can help identify potential vulnerabilities and ensure that customer data is handled ethically and securely.
“As a marketing data analyst the role as an individual that I can play in helping businesses use their web or marketing data more effectively. Firstly, businesses need to understand that they have a crucial role to play, they need to cultivate a data-driven mindset. Understanding the importance of data in decision-making processes is key. As an individual, I see my role as a catalyst for change. It’s about cultivating a data-driven mindset and encouraging businesses to engage with data insights. I consult for businesses and also focus on upskilling teams by providing training on AI and analytics tools, ensuring they have the skills needed to make data-driven decisions.
Additionally, I emphasise open communication and collaboration with data analysts and business leaders to align strategies and goals. Ultimately, it’s about empowering businesses to harness the power of data effectively to bring growth and innovation.
“There are instances where I have helped businesses I have worked with leverage AI in marketing and web analytics data and there are a lot. One instance was with a leading travel company in the United Kingdom, they had their web data lying fallow in their data warehouse and struggling to make meaningful sense out of it. I built a machine learning model that analysed the data and predicted the number of sessions, conversions and revenue based on previous data. This helped them to strategically allocate resources to accommodate the expected sessions, have a realistic expected revenue, set reasonable targets and ultimately help to drive conversions. Another instance with the same business was building AI models to identify common paths customers follow in the checkout funnel. They were able identify drop off points in the customer journey and they addressed the problem by optimising the page where customers drop off and improve the page user experience. This task brought about a 15 per cent reduction in customer drop off and four per cent increase in conversion rate in just a few months. Quite fascinating works you have done.
“The future of Ai in businesses is incredibly promising. As more Nigerian businesses embrace digital transformation, AI’s role in web analytics will become even more vital. We can expect to see more advanced AI applications, such as predictive analytics, which will allow businesses to forecast trends and consumer behavior with greater accuracy. Moreover, as AI technology continues to evolve, it will become more accessible to smaller businesses, leveling the playing field and enabling them to compete with larger corporations. We will begin to see emerging technologies like augmented reality and virtual reality opening up new possibilities for enhancing customer engagement and experience.
“It’s evident that we are on the brink of a digital revolution here in Nigeria and my advice would be to start with clear objectives and a well-defined strategy. Don’t try to do everything at once. Focus on specific areas where AI can have the most immediate impact. It’s also crucial to invest in training and upskilling your team to ensure they are equipped to work with AI technologies.
Lastly, keep an eye on emerging trends and be open to experimentation. AI is a rapidly evolving field.
