Are-Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, has joined the growing chorus of Nigerians calling for the restructuring of the country, describing it as the only solution to the perceived structural imbalances.

According to him, unless Nigeria’s constitution is reviewed to reflect the yearnings of Nigerians on restructuring to regionalism, the country will continue to falter.”

The Yoruba generalissimo made this submission in Ira, Kwara State, at the 2024 Oya Festival celebration, where he noted that countries with similar ethno-cultural diversities have surpassed Nigeria in growth and development.

Blaming the current crises in the country on the leaders and the constitution, Gani Adams stressed the need to revert to regionalism, stating, “The future of Nigeria is bleak with the present arrangement.”

Adams also urged the Federal Government to engage private investors willing to refine petroleum products locally, arguing that such efforts would make fuel more available and affordable for Nigerians.

“Many could not make it to Ira to attend this year’s event because of the present situation in the country. Anyone who is not economical with the truth will tell you that the country is not stable for now.

“We have a private investor who is ready to assist with fuel refining, but the government is creating bottlenecks for him. It’s not the best. We need to patronise investors to solve our petroleum needs.

“There is also a structural imbalance in the country. If we don’t restructure Nigeria into regions, there is no way Nigeria can move forward. We still practise a unitary system of government; it’s not workable,” he stressed.

The guest speaker, Engr. Kazeem Bello, praised the virtues of Oya as a woman of remarkable qualities, incomparable to any modern wife.

He noted that in history, Oya was the wife of Oba Sango and provided her husband with emotional, physical, and spiritual support.

He advised today’s women to emulate the virtues with which Oya was endowed.
