Former Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, has announced his resignation from the House of Representatives.

Gbajabiamila announced his resignation on his Twitter handle on Wednesday.

He explained that his decision to resign is for him to assume his new role as Chief of Staff to the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Earlier on Wednesday it was reported that Gbajabiamila’s resignation letter was presented on the floor of the house and read by the speaker, Tajudeen Abbas.

“To the glory of God, I resigned my membership of the newly Inaugurated 10th House of Representatives today,” he wrote on Twitter.

“I had the privilege to move the first motion in the new House which was on the need to prepare to avert the negative effects of the forecast of heavy flooding in some parts of the country. The House passed the resolutions accordingly. Thereafter, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas read my resignation letter and declared my seat vacant. An opportunity for the people of Surulere 1 Federal Constituency to elect my replacement.

“I have assumed my new office as the Chief of Staff to the President in readiness to work with Mr. President in delivering his Renewed Hope agenda for Nigeria.“

Gbajabiamila was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2003 and represents the Surulere I constituency of Lagos State.

He was the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives in the 7th National Assembly.

He has been elected for six consecutive terms to represent the people of Surulere 1 Federal Constituency of Lagos in the National Assembly.
