Nigerian gender advocate lawyer and founder of Gender Mobile Initiative, Omowumi Ogunrotimi, has been named one of the winners of the prestigious 2025 Global Citizen Prize.

Ogunrotimi bagged the notable award alongside distinguished voices whose works in the developmental space has been applauded by the global community. They include Valeriia Rachynska (Ukraine), Taily Terena (Brazil), Lydia Amenyaglo (Ghana).

According to Global Citizen, the world’s leading international advocacy organisation on a mission to end extreme poverty, the awards honoured these young people who are taking action to combat climate change, address systemic barriers, empower girls, and champion change in all its forms.

At the summit, taking place in New York City on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, the recipients will each receive a year-long programme of support from Global Citizen, together with a cash grant for their organisation.

The event is to be attended by the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Muhammed, and other world leaders and presidents. Sarah, Duchess of York; Bill Nye, Science Educator and Global Citizen Ambassador; José Manuel Barroso, Professor, Chair of Gavi Board; among others will also be in attendance.

Omowumi Ogunrotimi, a fearless feminist lawyer and founder of the Gender Mobile Initiative, is transforming Nigeria’s fight against gender-based violence.

With over 10 years of advocacy, she has championed the adoption of sexual violence policies in 22 states and over 150 universities.

Ogunrotimi’s leadership helped pass the Sexual Harassment Bill in Tertiary institutions at the Federal House of Representatives. As an Ashoka Fellow and award recipient, she remains dedicated to eradicating gender inequality, passionately driving legal reforms, and empowering communities to demand justice and change
