The Glorious Islamic Centre (GIC) has enlightened students on the crucial role of journalists in shaping society. The 14th yearly GIC Career Day tagged “Entrepreneurship, Counseling and Journalism”, brought together hundreds of students from various schools for an engaging and enlightening experience.

Speaking at the event, the Chairman of GIC Alhaji Wale Ojikutu said the event was to guide students in making informed decisions about their future. He added that the goal was to provide students with valuable insights and practical advice to navigate the complexities of their chosen careers. He also urged students to capitalise on the opportunities presented.

In his remark, Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) Acting Radio Manager, Ibrahim Fatoyibo, offered applicable advice on conquering fears and conceptualising innovative thoughts.

Fatoyibo provided insights into the rapidly evolving media landscape, highlighting the importance of critical thinking, creativity, and effective communication in the field. “Never give up, do not take no for an answer and never live your life to satisfy anyone,” he said.

Delivering the keynote address, Alhaji Tunde Olagunju, a renowned entrepreneur, shared practical experience on how to overcome challenges, cultivate innovative thinking, and build successful businesses. He said: “No matter what you study, you can all be entrepreneurs. You should be able to think ahead and visualise; you must be able to think and have the ability to engage your brain. You must be creative and innovative.”

A seasoned counsellor, Alhaja Ramatu Ahmed, said self-discovery is key to success. She encouraged the students to identify their strengths, passions, and values to make informed career decisions. “In choosing your career, you must be very passionate. At some points, what would keep you going is that passion; you would do it because of the satisfaction you get from it. To sustain a purposeful life, you have to know yourself, embrace lifelong learning, develop a life of gratitude and stay consistent and disciplined,” she said.
