Girl-child education dominates discussions as Aisha Buhari, 47 others receive excellence awards

The wife of the President, Aisha Buhari, and other notable women on Saturday in Abuja, reechoed the need to educate the girl-child, among other needs of the female gender.

This was made known when the wife of the president alongside 47 women, received awards for outstanding performances from Women of Worth, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO).

The wife of the president noted that the need to educate the girl-child could not be overemphasised, saying an educated girl has the capacity to impact not just her community positively but the country at large.

While encouraging women and the male folks to find ways of contributing their quota to the development of the nation, Buhari disclosed that she would be opening a school for the less privileged in Maiduguri in the coming weeks.

Buhari, who was represented by the Dr Mairo Tanko Almakura, said her foundation, called Aisha Buhari Foundation, will cater for the less privileged, among others.

The wife of the Bauchi State Governor, Aisha Bala, who was one of the recipients of the award said she had been spurred to do more.

She said the issue of education of women was dear to her heart, saying, “if women are not educated, the level of development will not be meaningful.

She urged women to shun any form of competition among themselves in order to work together to achieve common goals.

“The rural women are waiting for us to use our wealth of experience to better their lot and the best way to achieve result is by working together.”

Comfort Adesoye, President, Women of Worth, said the award marked the beginning of women celebrating women in Nigeria.

She said “We were only able to award a few women today but there are lots of silent people who have been outstanding in their various endeavours whom we appreciate for contributions to the society.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that some of the awardees are the Minister of Women Affairs, Pauline Tallen, Wife of the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Mrs Foluke Adeboye, and a former Broadcaster, Moji Makanjuola, among others.
