As from tomorrow, Nigerians who have been yearning for the return of comedy series to television will have cause to cheer as Professor Johnbull, the TV comedy drama series sponsored by Globacom, goes on air.

According to the telecommunications company, the funny, yet highly didactic drama series, will be broadcast from 8:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Fridays on the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) network, NTA International and Startimes.

The drama features popular actors including Kanayo O. Kanayo who plays the major character, and Professor Johnbull. Others are Mercy Johnson-Okogie, Yomi Fash-Lanso, Ime Bishop Okon, Queen Nwokoye, Junior Pope, Funky Mallam, Bimbo Akintola, Bidemi Kosoko, Chiwetalu Agu, O.C. Ukeje, Bovi, Mama G and Helen Paul.

The play begins with a montage summarising each of the characters in one word as Professor Johnbull, who likes to use highfalutin words to express himself, flips through the pages of one of the piles of books on his coffee table. He describes the characters in the social satire as “sedulous”, “gratuitous” and “philanderer” but simply sees himself as “erudite”.

Globacom, in a statement, said the story line and sequence of events in the first episode would keep viewers glued to their TV screens and anxious to watch the next telecast.

“In the episode, Glo ambassador and music superstar, D’banj’s sudden emergence at a local restaurant where they sell the best amala in Enugu, sparks off a flurry of activity. His fans rush to catch a glimpse of the superstar. laniyi, the restaurant owner, could not believe his luck seeing D’Banj at his restaurant.

Professor Johnbull encounters D’banj at Olaniyi’s restaurant and an argument soon breaks out between the erudite scholar and the music icon.

“The conversation ends amicably and an impressed Professor Johnbull invites D’banj and his friends to his home for the traditional Igbo hospitality.

“What happens when Churchill, the Professor’s son, who was a former classmate of D’banj shows up? It is an intriguing episode with a rich blend of social satire and powerful lessons for Nigerian youths. Viewers will find the Professor’s conclusions arresting,” the telecom operator stated.
