Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, yesterday, said that no good governance could be achieved without responsible parents willing to inculcate moral values in their children.

Hamzat, who stated this at a lecture series organised by Nasrul-Lahi-l-Fatih Society (NASFAT) in Lagos, lamented the absence of moral values in children and parents shying away from their responsibilities.

He said: “Many times when we talk about bad leaders, we have forgotten the fact that the process of becoming a leader begins from home. It is that home that teaches values that later translates into actions. Many families are broken and this has led to the collapse of discipline in the lives of the children.”

He said that the high rate of poverty in many homes had impacted negatively in loss of value, especially among the children.

The deputy governor, however, urged a collaborative effort among parents towards confronting the issue headlong, adding that the importance of the home cannot be overlooked in addressing the challenges.

ON his part, the presidential candidate of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso, who was represented by Olanrewaju Jim-Kamal, the governorship candidate of the party in Lagos State, said parents must understand that good parenting is an act of worship.

Kwankwaso, represented by Olanrewaju Jim-Kamal, the governorship candidate of the party in Lagos State, said that an opportunity for Nigerians to demand for good governance had come, saying that only a good leader can drive societal and developmental values.

ALSO, the President of NASFAT, Niyi Yusuf, said that the important roles parents played in good governance informed the decision of the faith-based religious association to hold the workshop.

He said that the country had, for too long, clamoured for good governance, hence the need for Nigerians to take action by actively participating in the upcoming general elections.

“As parents, we need to give good stewardship to our children while the leaders should discharge trust and covenant that we promised in our manifestos,” he advised.
