Gov tasks Bauchi traditional leaders, partners on ‘failing’ education sector

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has urged the traditional institution, development partners and other stakeholders to rescue the failing education sector in the state.

“We, as politicians, have failed; hence, we are bringing you, Your Royal Highnesses, to make sure you take corrective measures (on education),” he admitted.

Mohammed said this yesterday, while inaugurating the enrolment drive and back-to-school campaign committee, at the Government House, with the six emirs, education commissioner, representatives of United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Bauchi Field Office, and other stakeholders in attendance.

The governor, who was not happy about education indices of the state, said: “It is a shame to be enumerated among the states that have the highest number of out-of-school children, even where we are able to build 5,000 classes, we are still not there.

“Teachers are showing irresponsibility because of poverty or due to lack of supervision, monitoring and evaluation.”

He appointed the Emir of Bauchi, Suleiman Adamu, as chairman of the committee. The other five emirs are members Assuring the committee of his support, Mohammed said the success of exercise would not only transform the lives of the children, but also contribute to the overall development of Bauchi.
