Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has inaugurated the distribution of debit cards to over 400,000 beneficiaries of a World Bank-financed Conditional Cash Transfer Scheme, offering ₦75,000 in financial support to each recipient.
The formal launch took place at the Tsafe Local Government Secretariat and marks a significant phase in the state’s efforts to tackle poverty and economic vulnerability. According to a statement issued by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, the intervention is aimed at empowering residents to become more self-reliant.
Of the total 448,141 registered recipients, 279,534 have so far met the eligibility criteria and will receive the full amount, while the remainder will be processed in due course.
Governor Lawal described the initiative as a cornerstone of his administration’s commitment to social welfare, stressing that the funds should not be used solely for domestic consumption but also invested in small-scale ventures to foster economic independence.
“This empowerment aims to enable you to invest in your future, support your families, and contribute to the growth of our local and national economy,” he said. “I urge you all to use this opportunity wisely, invest in entrepreneurship and become self-reliant.”
He also expressed appreciation to the Federal Government, development partners, and the National Cash Transfer Office for their roles in facilitating the programme.
The Governor reaffirmed his administration’s readiness to collaborate with stakeholders to promote the social and economic development of Zamfara State. The ceremony concluded with the official distribution and activation of the debit cards for disbursement of the funds.
