Delta Staet Governor, Okowa

DELTA State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has deplored the current educational system in the country which results in a situation where graduates look up to government and private enterprises for gainful employment.

Speaking in Asaba while inaugurating the Governing Council of the Delta State Polytechnic, Ozoro, challenged lecturers to pay more attention to multi-disciplinary research and practical life skills to ensure that polytechnic graduates were self-employed.

Okowa said that the solution to the prevailing youth unemployment in the land was not certificate acquisition but skills’ building through technical cum vocational education.

“Students must be thought and equipped with entrepreneurial skills, problem-solving abilities, principles of personal effectiveness, leadership development, business and crisis management as well as current trends in business and ethics. These should be complemented with regular skills’ building and training programmes to upgrade and update their knowledge base,” he stated.

The governor stressed that he development of technical education was at the very core of his administration’s agenda because of his belief that until the youths were made to acquire requisite technical and vocational skills, there would not be bright future for them.

“No meaningful national development can be achieved without sound, qualitative technical education and in Delta State. Three of our technical colleges are currently being rehabilitated and refocused to equip students with the knowledge and entrepreneurial skills for business, trade and commerce,” he added.

Okowa challenged the governing council and management of the polytechnic to pay attention to improved curriculum and quality of teaching so as to equip their products with the needed mind-set and knowledge to excel in today’s rapidly changing world.

Former Commissioner for Works, Funkekeme Solomon is chairman of council while Joe Adigwe, Gabriel Alebe and Mrs. Oti Agoba are members.
