In just under a decade, Graemoh Foods Ltd, under the leadership of its founder and Managing Director, David Galadima, has transformed from a small, local venture to one of Nigeria’s leading agribusiness enterprises, earning international acclaim. Founded in 2016 as a sole proprietorship, Graemoh Foods Ltd now stands as an example of innovation and scalability in an industry where most competitors struggle to grow beyond subsistence levels.
Unlike the typical agribusiness ventures in Nigeria, where over 70% remain smallholder or subsistence-based, Graemoh Foods Ltd has achieved what many deemed impossible. The company has secured a place in global markets, in demand from West Africa, Europe, and North America. This expansion has been propelled by David’s visionary leadership, which has positioned Nigerian agricultural products on the global stage.
Under David’s direction, Graemoh Foods Ltd has achieved a remarkable increase in revenue. This is no small feat, given that the Nigerian agribusiness sector is fraught with challenges, and many enterprises never see growth beyond the local market. However, through the launch of four proprietary food products, crafted with precision and strategic foresight, David Galadima has ensured that Graemoh Foods Ltd stands out among competitors.
His success doesn’t just rest on financial growth. Mr. Galadima’s operational innovations have revolutionized the company’s internal workings. His development of a Recirculatory Aquaculture System (RAS) has set a new standard for sustainable fish farming in the region, conserving over 500,000 liters of freshwater per pond annually. Likewise, his invention of a two-stage stainless steel honey filtration system has transformed rural honey production by eliminating the need for electricity or manual labor, further enhancing Graemoh’s technological edge.
Graemoh Foods Ltd’s success is not just a story of corporate growth—it is also a tale of social impact. The company has created jobs in various sectors and established partnerships with more than 500 smallholder farmers. These initiatives have empowered local communities, particularly women, youth, and marginalized groups, providing them with access to good agricultural practices, training, and reliable markets.
In an exclusive interview with Mr. David Galadima, we gain insight into the visionary leadership that has propelled Graemoh Foods Ltd to new heights.
Interview with David Galadima, CEO of Graemoh Foods Ltd
Mr. Galadima, Graemoh Foods has experienced impressive growth since its inception. What would you say has been the key to your success?
David Galadima: The key to our success has been a combination of vision, innovation, and an unyielding commitment to sustainability. We’ve always sought to do things differently—whether it’s developing new products based on market needs or creating technological solutions to address inefficiencies in the industry. Our goal has always been to create value—not just for our business but for the entire agricultural ecosystem in Nigeria.
Graemoh Foods Ltd’s international expansion is impressive. What challenges did you face in breaking into global markets, and how did you overcome them?
David Galadima: The biggest challenge was establishing the right relationships and networks that would support our vision for global growth. Many Nigerian agribusinesses face barriers when trying to penetrate international markets, from regulatory hurdles to securing trade agreements. We worked tirelessly to build credibility and trust with partners in West Africa, Europe, and North America. This involved a lot of market research, understanding local demands, and adapting our products to suit different tastes and preferences. The hard work paid off, and today we’re proud to make a lot of progress.
Technological innovation has been central to Graemoh’s success. Can you tell us more about the Recirculatory Aquaculture System (RAS) you developed?
David Galadima: The RAS is a game-changer for sustainable fish farming. It’s designed to recirculate and conserve water, an incredibly important resource in fish farming. This is especially important as there’s a global shortage of fresh water. With this systems, we save at least 500,000 litres of water annually per fish pond. It was made possible through a Tony Elumelu Grant. This technology not only increases efficiency but also reduces operational costs and minimizes environmental impact. We are hopeful that it can serve as a sustainability model for other West African nations to adopt more sustainable practices.
Your company’s social impact is equally impressive. How do you balance profitability with giving back to the community?
David Galadima: It’s always been part of our mission to create economic opportunities for local communities. For us, profitability isn’t just about financial returns—it’s about contributing to the growth of Nigeria’s agricultural sector. Through our partnerships with over 500 smallholder farmers, we provide them with access to processing equipment, agritech, training, and markets. This empowers them to improve their livelihoods and, ultimately, strengthen the local food system. We also offer opportunities for women and youth in our workforce, creating jobs and supporting economic inclusion.
What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs who want to venture into agribusiness in Nigeria?
David Galadima: My advice is simple—be resilient and stay focused on creating value. Agribusiness in Nigeria is full of challenges, but it also presents huge opportunities. The key is to understand the local context, find innovative solutions to existing problems, and build strong partnerships. Don’t be afraid to take risks and think outside the box. Success doesn’t come overnight, but with the right mindset and determination, you can make a significant impact.
What role does sustainability play in the future of Graemoh Foods Ltd, and how do you plan to continue driving sustainability in your operations?
David Galadima: Sustainability is at the core of everything we do at Graemoh Foods. Whether it’s conserving water with our RAS system or reducing our environmental footprint through efficient production techniques, sustainability guides our decisions. Moving forward, we plan to scale these innovations and continue to implement practices that minimize waste, conserve resources, and promote eco-friendly methods of production. We believe that by investing in sustainable practices, we’ll not only improve our bottom line but also contribute positively to the environment and society as a whole.
Graemoh Foods has significantly impacted local food security and agricultural ecosystems. How do you see the role of agribusiness in shaping Nigeria’s future?
David Galadima: Agribusiness plays a critical role in shaping Nigeria’s future. With the country’s growing population, food security will continue to be a pressing issue. We believe that the future of agriculture lies in adopting modern, sustainable practices that can increase production while reducing environmental impact. At Graemoh Foods, we’re committed to being part of that solution by continuing to innovate, expand, and work closely with smallholder farmers to strengthen Nigeria’s agricultural ecosystem.
As a leader, how do you continue to evolve personally and professionally to stay at the forefront of innovation?
David Galadima: Leadership is an ongoing learning process. I’m always looking for new ways to challenge myself and keep improving. I do this by staying curious—whether it’s attending conferences, networking with other innovators, or learning from our partners and customers. I also place a high value on mentorship. By helping to guide younger entrepreneurs, I can stay connected to the next generation of leaders, which helps me stay grounded and innovative.
Mr. Galadima’s exceptional achievements have not gone unnoticed. He has been recognized by some of Nigeria’s most prestigious entrepreneurial organizations, including being one of only ten entrepreneurs selected for the highly competitive FATE Foundation ScaleUp Agribusiness Lab. Additionally, he received the YALI Alumni Innovation Fund Grant, a highly competitive award for Africa’s most impactful entrepreneurs, and the Tony Elumelu Grant. These accolades are a testament to his leadership and groundbreaking work in the agribusiness sector.
With a record of global expansion, technological innovations, and sustainable social impact, Mr. Galadima’s leadership has not only propelled Graemoh Foods Ltd to the forefront of Nigeria’s agribusiness sector but has also positioned him as one of the top agribusiness entrepreneurs in Africa.
