A group, Centre For Health Economics and Development, CHECOD, has called on the Federal Government to review policy, practice, and structures, processes and outputs,SPOs, using standardized analytical frameworks /tools for an integrated, sustainable and resilient health systems in Nigeria.
At the 10th Memorial Symposium of late Founding Chairman late Dr.Kenneth Ojo in Abuja, its Chairperson, Mrs. Veronica Ojo, said it will facilitate timely evidence – based health planning, like strategic and operational, budgeting, monitoring, implementation and evaluation for better outcomes.
Ojo argued that people who believe that stronger systems will save lives, adding that they believe deeply that health is not a privilege but a right, and that legacy is not measured in statues or plaques, but in lives touched, policies that endure, and institutions that outlive us all.
She explained that they stand at a pivotal moment for Nigeria’s health sector, saying that the Sector -Wide Approach,SWAp, is no longer just a concept on paper, rather, it’s a living commitment for government leading, partners aligning, resources flowing through one plan, one budget, one result framework.
“But momentum is fragile. We have seen too many reforms rise with fanfare and fade away with new leadership in the country. Systems must outlast personalities. Institutions must outlive individuals, and that is the deepest tribute we can pay to late Dr Ojo.”
The Chairperson therefore expressed their deepest gratitude to the Federal and State Ministries of Health for playing leadership roles, explaining that accountability should be fierce and transparent so that every naira spent can be traced to a life improved,a child vaccinated, and a mother safely delivered.
She commended development partners who have stood with CHECOD through thick and thin, and to the brilliant, tireless, and agile team across borders, adding, with pride African continent health systems are stronger, more integrated, and truly accountable to the people they serve.
Also Guest Speaker,Dr Julie McLaughlin called on the Federal Government to deepen its institutionalization and integration of the approach to the sustaining SWAp momentum by focusing on the results, stressing that these have to be measured and they have to be attained in Nigeria.
