Group Calls For Judicial Reforms To Fight Corruption

court.jpg-citynewsA HUMAN rights association, Nigeria 2015 Group (UK), has thrown its weigh behind President Muhammadu Buhari’s war on graft, calling on the Prof. Itse Sagay-led Presidential Advisory Committee on Anti-Corruption to expedite action in producing the legal framework for fighting corruption in the country.

In a communiqué signed by Kingsley Ogbonda and Tunde Doherty, its lead for communications and lead for campaigns, respectively, the group said it believes that contrary to growing criticism of government efforts, President Buhari respects the rule of law, which is one of fundamental principles of democracy.

It said: “A quiet display of irritation caused by President Buhari’s enduring sense of patriotism and abiding sense of national duty should not by any stretch of imagination be elevated to an abuse of the rule of law. We believe the President has clearly demonstrated his belief in the rule of law by challenging his previous elections defeats in courts and accepting the verdicts regardless of some reservations of those judgements by observers.”

It called for far-reaching reforms of the judiciary, alleging, some judges aided by disreputable lawyers have been bending justice

Noting that the situation called for drastic measures, the group said, “it is our solemn belief that unless the Nigerian judiciary is reformed the fight against corruption would be hard to be successfully prosecuted; we hope that the Prof Sagay’s committee will incorporate this concern in its final report.”
