Group campaigns against gender-based violence In Lagos
The Ovie Brume Foundation, recently, led no fewer than 80 children and parents during an awareness walk to end to gender-based violence (GBV) in Lagos communities.
The foundation, during an advocacy walk in Surulere and its environs to mark the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence in Lagos State, revealed that a large number of victims were discovered, who were scared of speaking up and seeking for help due to societal and family culture and norms.
The Programme Assistant and Student Coordinator, Ovie Brume Foundation, Eze Nkemjika Peace, said the foundation, discovered a large number of victims in communities in Lagos State.
She said some of the victims didn’t have who to talk to or know how to seek help.
Peace said while some perpetrators were punished, some bought their ways out of being punished by the law.
She lamented that the societies, families and the victims were not addressing the issue, thereby, making the fight against difficult.
“The victims have a lot to do in fighting against this act. The public should also come out massively through public channels to bring justice for the victims. The government should carry out investigation to bring a stop to this violent act. We should help the victims so they won’t keep quiet and end up dead,” she said.
Also, the Finance and Administrative Manager, Ovie Brume Foundation, Mr. Tayo Bakre, called for a total stop to all the forms of violence against all genders, noting that in this 21st century, all the religious beliefs and societal norms promoting gender-based violence should be eliminated.
Bakre said the foundation is working with sister non-governmental organisations to address this issues and bring a stop to it, especially as the Lagos State government has channels set up to tackle and totally eliminate the inhumane act against humanity.
He said, although, there are system failures to fully implement the laws and punishment of perpetrators of the act, people should speak up and follow the necessary steps with the hopes that everything will be done right.
A parent, Mrs Bankole Eunice, called for necessary and stiffer actions on perpetrators of violent actions against children.
She sympathised with all the children who are victims of physical, mental and emotional abuses, while calling for full implementation of the law as well as jail term for perpetrators to serve as a deterrent to others.
