Group canvasses better cyber security practices in Nigeria
THE Cyber Security Experts Association of Nigeria (CSEAN) has canvassed the need for more effective information security practice in Nigeria, which it says, is increasingly becoming evident with each security breach reported in the media.
The President of the association, Remi Afon, who stated this during the association’s induction ceremony of new members on in Abuja, said:“When adopting new technologies like cloud computing, virtualisation, or IT outsourcing, enterprises face imminent security threats and must adjust their security processes, policies and architectures accordingly.
“Among the many options available to help achieve this goal; against the growing trends of cyber security threats in Nigeria, government and organisations may be charged to consider the value of ethical hacking employment, which is rapidly gaining attention as an essential security practice globally with need for regular and better attention.
“The increased sophistication and success rate for recent cyber attacks is directly related to the shift in attacker profile, indicating that nation-states and large criminal organisations are funding well-organised, highly-motivated and well-trained teams of programmers, it is quite unfortunate that adequate attention is not being paid to cyber security by successive governments in Nigeria. The question is do we really have capacity to detect if Nigeria is being compromised?”
According to Afon:“The world is facing a cyber-evolution of sort with a lot of cyber espionage going on worldwide. The elevated threat landscape being highlighted on is one in need of critical attention and urgently dictates the need for a comprehensive, real-world assessment of Nigeria’s cyber security posture. This assessment is, however, viewed as a first vital step to enact effective security strategies, policies, procedures, and infrastructure that will prevent or mitigate the effects of breach and compromise.”
