A civil society organisation, Movement for Truth and Justice, has dismissed recent media reports suggesting a crisis within the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), describing the allegations against the Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Aminu Maida, as unfounded and politically motivated.
At a press conference in Abuja, the group’s convener, Comrade Grace Ujata, condemned what she described as a smear campaign orchestrated by mischief-makers seeking to discredit Dr. Maida and destabilize the Commission.
Ujata urged media houses to uphold ethical standards, including objectivity and fact-checking, and refrain from being used as tools in politically motivated agendas.
“The recent attacks on Dr. Maida are part of a well-coordinated attempt to tarnish his reputation and pressure him out of office,” Ujata said.
“We have credible intelligence that certain individuals, with strong backing from influential figures in the Ministry and National Assembly, are pushing for his replacement with a female candidate who is politically connected at the highest levels.”
She added that the group would not hesitate to publicly name those behind the alleged plot if the campaign of misinformation continues.
The group also expressed concern over what it described as the involvement of some disgruntled assistant directors within the NCC, alleging that several of them, having failed recent promotional exams, were now instigating internal unrest and sponsoring media attacks to advance external interests.
“These individuals are using their frustrations to undermine the Commission’s stability and effectiveness,” Ujata claimed.
Commending Dr. Maida’s performance, the group said his leadership aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and has repositioned the NCC for innovation, transparency, and efficiency.
“Dr. Maida has shown competence, integrity, and dedication to national development. He deserves encouragement, not vilification,” Ujata concluded.
