Gov tasked on implementation of FOI Act

The National High Command of an apex socio-political Imo-based group, comprising the three senatorial districts of Imo State, Trinity Owerri, Okigwe and Orlu Political Consultative Assembly (OPOCA), has expressed gratitude and support to Governor Hope Uzodimma over his role in securing a grant of $1.5 billion from the Africa Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank).

In a statement issued, yesterday, by the Convener, Willie Amadi, and the Head of Secretariat, Amby Uneze, the group was pleased by the consistency and the symbiotic dexterity applied by the governor in securing the grant for an investment portfolio in the state, as a result of the last weekend’s visit of Uzodimma to the bank’s President, Prof. Benedict Oramah, and officials of the bank in Cairo, Egypt.

MEANWHILE, members of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), media practitioners and other critical stakeholders in Imo State have called for the implementation of the Freedom of Information Act (FOI) in the state.

They said the implementation of the Act would, among other benefits, enhance and guarantee good governance, accountability, transparency, stability and general well-being of citizens.

The call is contained in a communique reached in a one-day stakeholders meeting organised by a non-governmental feminist organisation, Alliances for Africa (AfA), held in Owerri, which was made available to The Guardian, yesterday.

Participants urged the state government, and the state assembly to prioritise and support efforts that would allow citizens to have access to non-classified information or records in the custody of any public institution, or private institution utilising public funds, performing public functions or providing public services.”
