Junior Chamber International (JCI), Uyo City has donated items to Babies of the Year at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

It also highlighted challenges faced by nursing mothers.

Items donated to parents of the babies included diapers and Cusson gift packs, baby wipes, lotion, oil, jelly, shower gel, powder, bathing soap, sponge and cash gifts.

Speaking during the presentation, President, JCI, Akon Uno, who led other members of the organisation to the hospital, said the gesture was to support and show love to parents that went through the stress of child-bearing.

She observed that mothers experience negative feelings that go unnoticed after childbirth.

According to her, there are some mental health issues in the first few weeks or months after childbirth; hence the need to give support to them through ‘Impact Baby Project’.

Families, who benefited from the project, expressed gratitude to JCI.

Addressing the beneficiaries, Uyo-based behavioural coach, Akanimo Oriowo, tasked them on effective management of postpartum depression and mental health issues associated with motherhood.

She urged government to provide suitable and sufficient facilities in hospitals to improve health sector.

“Government should support Nigerians with free healthcare policies and address financial challenges experienced by low-income earners in accessing health services. The healthcare services should include free ante-natal classes, cesarean sections, assisted deliveries and free healthcare for senior citizens,” she said.
