A political strategist and public affairs analyst, Otunba Segun Showunmi, has been recognised by the Advocacy for the Empowerment of Nigerian Women and Children Initiative for his contributions to gender inclusion and support for women in leadership.
The group’s convener, Hajia Salamatu Sokoto, presented the award to Showunmi at a private ceremony.
Showunmi received the Outstanding Champion for Women and Children Empowerment 2025 award, in acknowledgment of what the organisation described as his consistent advocacy for inclusive governance and equitable representation.
While presenting the award, Hajia Sokoto commended Showunmi’s role in promoting female participation across various sectors.
“He is not just a supporter; he is a true champion of the cause. We need more leaders like him who will create spaces for women to lead, thrive, and make critical decisions for the good of Nigeria,” she said.
In his remarks, Showunmi reaffirmed his position on the need for greater inclusion of women in leadership roles.
“We must do everything possible to grant women more access to leadership. A nation that denies half of its population a seat at the table of progress is only stalling its own destiny. I stand firmly with every woman aspiring to lead.”
The group said the award is part of its efforts to recognise individuals and institutions supporting the structural inclusion of women and young people in national development.
The group noted that while progress has been recorded in some areas, women continue to face structural and societal barriers in political representation, economic opportunities, and decision-making processes.
