Group seeks active youth participation in election

A group, League of Progressives Ambassadors of Nigeria (LEPAN), has enjoined youths to participate actively in the forthcoming governorship election in Anambra.

LEPAN president, Chukwudi Anyawuocha, noted that it was time the younger generation began to create the change they desired.

He spoke during a seminar tagged, ‘#1Vote’, and on the topic, ‘Overcoming the challenges of voter apathy among youths’, at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Anambra State.

“It is time to see our youths actively involved in politics. This will help a lot in our political system. They should monitor election processes and fight against every form of corrupt practices,” he said.

Programme officer of the group, Olalekan Adigun, said: “The timing of the event is deliberate, considering the fact that the gubernatorial election in the state is just few days away. The venue for today’s seminar was chosen carefully because this university can be said to contain the largest population of young Anambra people in the state, who are the target of the programme.”

A participant at the event, Jude Iloh, applauded the organisers. “The initiative is a welcome development in the political system in the country. It is time to fight against voter apathy among Nigerian youths. This will also guide them in their choice of candidate and make them know who actually means well for the country. This is an avenue to create democratic awareness among youths in the state,” said Iloh.
