Group Seeks Urgent Repair Of Enugu-Onitsha Expressway

A GROUP, Oganiru Awka, the umbrella body of Awka professionals, has urged both the federal and Anambra State governments to urgently rehabilitate the Enugu-Onitsha expressway.

The group decried the untold hardship people of the state as well as other Nigerians who ply the ever-busy highway suffer on a daily basis.

The group also noted that the highway which was constructed some 34 years ago has now cut off at different points, thereby providing opportunity for robbers and miscreants to hang around and cause untold havoc on unsuspecting Nigerians who go about their normal activities.

President of the group, Sir Charles Chukwuma, in a statement said the Enugu-Onitsha highway, which is one of the busiest highways in the country in view of the heavy vehicular traffic that ply the route on a daily basis, and of significant economic importance to the South East zone, had become a death trap to motorists and other road users.

“Going to Enugu through Onitsha would remind you of hell on earth. This particular road is of strong economic importance to old Eastern Region. The road is now a shadow of its old self — no thanks to the deplorable state of the highway linking Enugu, Awka and Onitsha,” Chukwuma said.
