Group sensitises traders on environmental protection

Poised to create awareness for a sustainable environment, the Nigerian Environmental Society (NES), Lagos Mainland Chapter, yesterday, took its campaign to Aguda Market, Surulere, Lagos.
The group also advocated the need for alternative sources of energy to reduce carbon emissions and stop food wastage. Chairperson, Programme Planning Committee of the group, Dr. Wunmi Olatunji, said the group thought it is worthy to carry out more sensitisation, specifically in markets.
She said: “We need to sensitise a place like Aguda Ultra-Modern market, telling them how to manage their environment to make it sustainable for future generations.
“We don’t have another planet to live. So, we have put measures in place to make the environment sustainable. We have educated the people on greenhouse effect and the need for people to switch to solar energy and source power from renewable energy sources instead of generators to reduce carbon emissions.
“The food that is cooked at home should be commensurate with the number of people preparing it to avoid wastage. There is also a need to sensitise everyone, especially traders to the danger of plastic pollution. They must know that collecting pet bottles can fetch them money, by then, plastics littering the place can be reduced.”
Commenting, General Secretary, Association of Commodity Market, Lagos State, Coker Aguda Chapter, Adunni Abibat, said: “Apart from the talk on environment, NES made our people understand the danger of noise pollution also. Now we know more about the danger of inhaling fumes from generators in the market. I learned a lot from this outing and I will gather my people together to educate them more.”
Abibat, who is also the General Secretary, Aguda Modern Market, said there is a need for traders to seek other sources to generate power instead of relying on generators.
