Unknown gunmen in the early hours of yesterday stormed the sleepy Ogrute community of Enugu-Ezike in Igboeze North Council of Enugu State and kidnapped a 34-year-old nursing mother, Mrs. Rita Abugu.

The young mother, whose husband had just returned from the United Kingdom (UK), was said to be on her way to attend the burial ceremony of her late grandmother-in-law when the kidnappers struck.

It was suspected that the kidnappers might have targeted the return of her husband from Europe to extort money from him.

The husband, a businessman and owner of Applause Hotel in Ogrute, was said to have specifically returned home for the burial ceremony.

It was gathered that the kidnappers had left the two-year daughter of the victim on the road during the operation. The baby was later rescued by passers-by.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Ebere Amaraizu, said he was yet to be briefed on the incident as at press time.
