A new study has revealed that gym equipment contains more bacteria than many common surfaces, posing potential health risks to users.
The research, conducted by FitRated, found that gym machines, including treadmills, exercise bikes, and free weights, contain over a million germs per square inch.
Chelsea Freeburn, a member of the FitRated creative team, said, “Gym equipment is generally used by a community of people. If not wiped down thoroughly before and after use, bacterial growth can occur.” He compares the scenario to having long handshakes with multiple sweaty people and claims that a typical treadmill has 74 times more bacteria than a public bathroom faucet, according to their research.
Among the bacteria identified were gram-positive cocci, which can lead to skin infections, and antibiotic-resistant gram-negative rods. The study noted that free weights had 362 times more bacteria than a toilet seat, while treadmills held 74 times more germs than a typical public bathroom faucet.
The frequent use of gym equipment by multiple people creates an environment where bacteria can thrive. Although many gyms provide disinfectant wipes, the study found that users often fail to clean machines before or after workouts.
However, the team also encouraged ways to reduce the risk of exposure to these germs by recommending regular disinfection of gym equipment, practising good hygiene, avoiding touching the face, and washing hands thoroughly.
“Most gyms provide materials to wipe equipment post-use. It’s surprising that people seem to neglect using them, especially when they’re right there. If your gym doesn’t provide these materials, bring your own disinfectant wipes and request that they start. Always make sure to practise good hygiene, like washing your hands with antibacterial soap before and after each workout,” Freeburn added.
