The leaders of Hausa and Fulani communities in the South-East have decried the high rate of poverty in the region and warned of bleak future in Nigeria. Speaking to The Guardian on the state of the nation, the Sarkin Hausawa Anawbia, in Awka South Local Council of Anambra State, Mahmud Sani, said prices of goods and services have gone beyond the reach of average Nigerians.
Sani pointed out that poverty, hunger, diseases, and scarcity of goods have literally conspired to worsen the plight of Nigerians, especially the poor.
He observed that his subjects, who bring farm produce and other articles of trade from the Northern part of the country to Igbo land, are compelled to spend twice the cost of the products, due to logistics.
The Sarkin Hausawa Amawbia noted that many families in want shun medical attention due to lack of money, and those who want to seek medication are constrained because of necessity to buy food to survive first.
Sani called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently address the issue of poverty among the masses, occasioned by hike in fuel prices.
He hinted that the inability of parents and guardians to provide for the welfare of their children and wards are making jobless youths to go into social vices, including prostitution, drug peddling, kidnapping and armed robbery.
