There is a heavy security presence in the Ikeja Underbridge axis of Lagos State on Thursday morning ahead of the June 12 Democracy Day protest in Lagos.
The Guardian reports that protesters had gathered at the location at the time of filing of this report on Thursday morning.
In videos seen by our correspondent, security operatives including the police were seen parading the scene.
The spokesperson of the Lagos State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed this in a post he shared on X.
He wrote, “Democracy Day celebrants and protesters at Ikeja Underbridge. Adequate security on ground for celebrants and protesters alike. No cause for alarm. Your safety and security remains our priority”.
The Guardian learnt that the state’s commissioner of police, Lagos State, Olohundare Jimoh, met with leaders of 15 Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Lagos State on Wednesday to discuss the Democracy Day celebration and planned protests by some CSOs.
The protesters agreed to converge on Ikeja Under-Bridge simultaneously and jointly proceed to Gani Fawehinmi Park at Ojota to protest. They also agreed that no protest will take place anywhere else except at the only designated place at Gani Fawehinmi Park, Ojota.
The Guardian also reported on Thursday morning that security has been heightened in and around the National Assembly complex ahead of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s scheduled appearance before a joint session of the Senate and House of Representatives.
