As Nigeria intensified efforts to achieve the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets and move closer to HIV epidemic control, molecular diagnostics specialist Adepoju Lukman Ademola emerged as a key technical leader in strengthening HIV testing, viral load monitoring, and laboratory diagnostic systems across several high-burden states in Southern Nigeria.

Working with Achieving Health Nigeria Initiative (AHNi) under the Global Fund-supported National Aligned HIV/AIDS Initiative (NAHI) Grant, Mr. Adepoju spearheaded initiatives designed to improve access to HIV diagnostic services, strengthen laboratory quality-management systems, and expand treatment-monitoring capacity across healthcare facilities serving both urban and rural populations.

According to the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), Nigeria’s South-South region bears the highest HIV burden in the country, making the strengthening of diagnostic infrastructure and treatment-monitoring systems a critical component of national HIV-control efforts. In response to this challenge, Mr. Adepoju provided technical leadership supporting HIV testing, viral load monitoring, disease surveillance, and laboratory systems strengthening across program-supported states, including Anambra, Delta, Enugu, and Imo.

Through his leadership, he coordinated PCR-based molecular diagnostic activities that improved the timely processing of HIV diagnostic and viral-load samples used for patient management and treatment monitoring. He also led efforts to strengthen laboratory quality-assurance systems, optimize diagnostic workflows, and improve specimen-referral networks linking healthcare facilities in underserved and hard-to-reach communities with centralized molecular diagnostic laboratories.

Public-health stakeholders credited these interventions with improving the reliability, efficiency, and accessibility of HIV diagnostic services across participating states. By strengthening laboratory operations and enhancing the quality of diagnostic data available to clinicians and program managers, Mr. Adepoju helped healthcare providers make more timely treatment decisions, improve patient monitoring, and strengthen HIV-surveillance activities.

His contributions further supported broader HIV-control initiatives implemented by AHNi, the Government of Nigeria, the Global Fund, PEPFAR, and other development partners working to reduce HIV-related morbidity and mortality. Through the implementation of strengthened diagnostic systems and improved laboratory-management practices, he helped expand access to quality HIV testing services and reinforce healthcare infrastructure supporting epidemic-control efforts.

Healthcare leaders have emphasized that reliable molecular diagnostics remain a cornerstone of successful HIV treatment and prevention programs. By spearheading laboratory systems improvements, strengthening diagnostic quality, and expanding access to HIV testing and viral-load monitoring services, Mr. Adepoju contributed meaningfully to public-health efforts aimed at improving treatment outcomes and accelerating progress toward national HIV epidemic-control goals.

His work demonstrates how innovative laboratory leadership and technical expertise can strengthen healthcare systems, improve access to life-saving diagnostic services, and support evidence-based responses to some of the most pressing public-health challenges facing communities across Southern Nigeria.
