PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu, yesterday, called on Nigerians to embrace deep spiritual reflection and renew their commitment to national unity and development as Christians and Muslims commence the Lenten season and the holy month of Ramadan simultaneously this year.
Similarly, African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain and former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, described the rare overlap of Lent and Ramadan as a powerful symbol of unity and national rebirth for Nigeria.
Lent is 40 days of abstinence and charity, excluding Sundays (which are observed as days of grace because of the Resurrection), while Ramadan lasts for 30 days.
Lent and Ramadan coincide in 2026, a rare occurrence that happens roughly every 33 years due to the Islamic lunar calendar’s shift relative to the Gregorian calendar.
In a message to the Christian and Muslim faithful, the President described the rare alignment of the two sacred observances as a significant moment for collective introspection and moral renewal, noting that both periods emphasise sacrifice, discipline, compassion and devotion to God.
He said the convergence of Lent and Ramadan presents an opportunity for citizens across religious divides to reaffirm shared values and strengthen bonds of peaceful coexistence, stressing that faith should inspire positive action towards national stability and progress.
Tinubu explained that Lent, observed by most Christians worldwide, is traditionally marked by fasting, abstinence and penitence in remembrance of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, while Ramadan, observed by Muslims, is characterised by fasting, prayer, charity and renewed submission to the will of God as one of the core pillars of Islam.
According to the President, the spiritual discipline embedded in both seasons should translate into responsible citizenship, honesty in both public and private conduct, and a stronger sense of duty to community and country.
He urged Nigerians to use the holy season to pray for peace, security and economic advancement, adding that “national transformation begins with individual moral renewal and collective goodwill.”
IN a message, yesterday, to commence the fasting periods for both Christians and Muslims across the world, the Presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, who noted that both sacred periods began on the same day, described it as an extraordinary spiritual convergence in a country.
Obi maintained that the overlap should be seen beyond a mere coincidence, but as a blessing and a struggle with poor leadership.
He wants the alignment to be seen also as a shared season of sacrifice, reflection and renewed hope amid insecurity and economic challenges.
Describing it as “Double Fast”, he urged Nigerians across religious and regional divides to seek divine mercy for the healing of the nation.
He stressed that prayer must be paired with action, encouraging citizens to embrace charity, forgiveness and self-discipline—values central to both faiths.
The ADC bigwig stressed that the period offers a chance for a spiritual reset and a recommitment to shared humanity, expressing hope it could usher in lasting peace and unity.
