House adopts report on establishment of peace corps

National Assembly (NASS)

The House of Representatives has adopted a conference committee report on the bill to establish the Nigerian Peace Corps (NPC).

Moving the motion for the consideration of the report during plenary, yesterday, Babangida Ibrahim (NNPP, Katsina), said the corps would be charged with responsibility of developing, empowering and providing gainful employment for youths.

Ibrahim added that it would also facilitate peace, volunteerism, community service, neighbourhood watch and nation-building.

The Senate’s version seeks dissolution of the existing Peace Corps of Nigeria (PCN) and National Unity and Peace Corps.

The Green Chamber’s version of the bill recommends dissolution of PCN and transformation into NPC when assented to by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The two chambers passed the NPC Establishment Bill in 2022.
