How Bashir Gegu transformed lives through scholarships, hospital, empowerment

For hundreds of families across Kogi State, Engr. Abubakar Bashir Mohammed, popularly known as Bashir Gegu, has become a symbol of hope through his humanitarian interventions in healthcare, education and empowerment.

As Commissioner for Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, Bashir Gegu facilitated the construction of an ultra-modern referral hospital in Gegu Beki, improving access to healthcare services for residents and neighbouring communities.

The commissioner has also sponsored scholarships for over 300 students and paid school fees for many others in a bid to support access to quality education.

In addition, he has rolled out empowerment grants for women and youths, helping beneficiaries establish small businesses and become financially independent.

Recent empowerment programmes spearheaded by him saw constituents receive start-up packs such as sound systems, cameras, tailoring machines, Point of Sale machines, and pumping machines for farmers.

He has also undertaken clean-water projects in rural communities, donated transformers to improve electricity supply, and created job opportunities for residents.

His latest intervention includes the construction of a two-block classroom at Wuro Mangoro, a Fulani community in Kogi Local Government Area.

Observers say these initiatives have significantly improved living standards in many communities and further strengthened his reputation as a grassroots politician.

Speaking on his philosophy of life, Bashir Gegu once said, “The essence of living is to help each other. If you cannot help, don’t hurt each other.”

That principle appears to define his style of leadership and community engagement.
