Solar can make a start in Nigeria but it cannot meet the peak and bulk loads. Gas has failed Nigeria because of its transmission.Instead of transporting gas, it is easier and cheaper to transport electricity. Thus the immediate need is to build (1) large gas plants in its source- well heads (2) build HT transmission lines across Nigeria. One more area to focus is to accelerate coal mining, build large plants at pit heads. The coal plants will reduce dependence on gas. These efforts can be complemented by solar and wind across the country. One of the key areas where gas and solar will complement each other are (1) distributed generation in rural areas as well as (2) make very large numbers of gas based small engines supported by solar panels (5-10 horse power each) to pump water to irrigate the vast vacant lands all over Nigeria which is blessed with adequate rainfall for a very profitable agriculture- but sadly the lands are idle due to lack of electricity to pump water. All this will require a coordinated plans by the governments at the federal and state levels.
