*Asks other South-East govs to emulate Enugu Gov

Civil rights advocacy group, Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), has applauded Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State for the creation of the State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS) Igbo-Eno in Enugu State to train medical professionals.

HURIWA, in a statement by its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, urged other Governors in the South-East like Hope Uzodimma of Imo State to follow suit to make more youths efficient and professionally trained in the South-East.

Ugwuanyi founded the medical varsity to solve the challenges that numerous applicants in Enugu State face in gaining admission into tertiary institutions, especially for professional and competitive courses such as Medicine, Pharmacy, Allied Health Sciences, Engineering, Law, etc.

The creation of the medical varsity has accommodated thousands of youths who have been left stranded without admission in the country.

The specialised university will definitely address the acute shortage of health personnel in the state and across the country as well as the consequential effects of brain drain plaguing the country.

HURIWA’s Onwubiko said, “We salute the innovation of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi in the creation of the specialised medical university to train Enugu youths and are certain that this will skyrocket healthcare development in the state.

“We also call on other South East governors such as Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State who has ruined his state by militarizing the state and the attendant unlawful executions of Igbo youths by soldiers and police.

“Uzodimma should borrow a leaf from Ugwuanyi who has built one of the most well-equipped, well staffed and adequately funded medical colleges to bridge the gap in opportunities for training of aspiring medical practitioners in the East and Nigeria as a whole. The institution will sure become a reference point in medical training and education.”
