HURIWA calls for mechanisms to check corruption in security votes

The National Coordinator of Association, Mr Emmanuel Onwubiko, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Tuesday.

He said the nation required a reduction in the huge amount of money devoted to security annually because the amount being said to have been spent could not be said to be yielding commensurate results in the country’s security condition.

He added that “HURIWA is worried that despite the huge amount allocated to security, the situation is far from being normal.”

Reacting to Gov. Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State’s resolve to reduce his salary and that of his Deputy by 50 per cent, Onwubiko said it was a right step in the right direction.

He, however, said “the salary of a governor is insignificant to make any impact on the state’s economy.’’

According to him, a governor’s salary in Nigeria is less than one million a month, so it is inconsequential.
