Ibas restored calm in Rivers, revived public confidence — Group

The Nigeria Peace and Governance Initiative has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his intervention in the political crisis in Rivers State, particularly through the appointment of Rear Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (rtd) as Sole Administrator.

In a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Friday, the group’s president, Dr. Charles Obeli, described the federal action as both timely and necessary, stating that it has restored calm and revived public confidence in governance and democratic institutions across the state.

“Before the federal government stepped in, Rivers was on the brink,” Obeli said. “The democratic space was under threat, with state power being reduced to a tool of personal control. The appointment of Rear Admiral Ibas has brought a halt to that descent into lawlessness and has signalled the return of responsible governance.”

Dr. Obeli credited the Sole Administrator with taking swift, neutral, and stabilising steps since assuming office, adding that the state’s political temperature has dropped noticeably.

“There is a visible return to civil order. Public offices are functioning without fear, and political intimidation has receded. It demonstrates the power of impartial, disciplined leadership,” he noted.

The group also praised President Tinubu’s nomination of professionals for appointment into key state institutions, including the Rivers State Electoral Commission and the Civil and Local Government Service Commissions. According to Dr. Obeli, the move reflects a shift toward merit and competence in public appointments.

“These are not partisan loyalists or recycled politicians. They are technocrats with verifiable records. It sends a strong message to the people of Rivers State—that governance is returning to substance and away from political expediency,” he said.

He further stated that the president’s decision to insulate the process from political interference shows a sensitive understanding of the region’s complex political environment.

“For years, the people of Rivers have longed for a leadership approach that prioritises service delivery over political entrenchment. This recent intervention has provided that opportunity,” Obeli added.

Calling on the National Assembly to expedite the confirmation of the nominated candidates, Dr. Obeli said the institutional rebuilding process must not be delayed.

“Time is of the essence. The confirmation of these nominees is vital to institutionalising stability and restoring public trust,” he said.

He also urged traditional leaders, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders to support the current efforts to stabilise and reform governance structures in the state.

“Peace is not automatic—it is built through conscious action. Rivers State has been given a window of opportunity. We must all rally to ensure this moment is not squandered,” Dr. Obeli said.

The Nigeria Peace and Governance Initiative reaffirmed its commitment to promoting transparency, civic participation, and peacebuilding as Rivers State navigates its current political transition.
