The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has taken a decisive step to reinforce Nigeria’s anti-corruption architecture by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Nigerian Bar Association Anti-Corruption Committee (NBA-ACC).
The landmark agreement, signed on Thursday at the ICPC Headquarters in Abuja, aims to promote integrity, professional ethics, and strict adherence to the rule of law within the legal profession and the wider governance space.
The event also featured the signing of a second MoU between the NBA-ACC and the Anti-Corruption Academy of Nigeria (ACAN), the training and research arm of the ICPC, further deepening institutional collaboration in capacity building, education, and research.
Speaking at the ceremony, ICPC Chairman, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, described the partnership as a deliberate and strategic response to the persistent challenge of corruption, stressing that no single institution can effectively tackle the menace in isolation.
“Corruption thrives where institutions work alone, but integrity flourishes where partnerships are forged,” Dr. Aliyu said, noting that the MoU is anchored on shared values of accountability, ethical conduct, and service to the Nigerian public.
According to him, the alliance provides a structured framework for harmonising enforcement and prevention through capacity development, public enlightenment, ethical reorientation, and sustained professional engagement to deliver measurable, lasting results.
Dr. Aliyu highlighted the natural synergy between the ICPC as a statutory anti-corruption agency and the NBA as the custodian of legal professionalism, adding that their collaboration is critical to strengthening the justice system and restoring public confidence in governance.
He also underscored the role of ACAN in nurturing long-term impact, describing education, research, and skills development as essential tools in building a new generation of legal practitioners for whom integrity is non-negotiable.
In his remarks, Chairman of the NBA Anti-Corruption Committee, Professor Babafemi A. Badejo, hailed the MoUs as a bold statement of collective resolve to build a Nigeria driven by strong institutions and professional discipline.
Professor Badejo explained that the agreement with the ICPC establishes a robust platform for collaboration to promote ethical standards within the legal profession, enhance institutional capacity, raise public awareness, and advocate for policy reforms.
He added that the complementary MoU with ACAN would prioritise education and research through structured anti-corruption curricula, joint studies, and specialised certificate programmes for lawyers and allied professionals.
Both the ICPC and the NBA-ACC expressed confidence that the partnership would significantly advance transparency, accountability, and the rule of law, while reinforcing integrity as the cornerstone of Nigeria’s legal and governance systems.
